Petit theft involves taking less than $750, which is a misdemeanor. However, if the amount is at or above $750, it becomes grand theft, which is a felony. A petit theft can also become a felony on a 3rd or subsequent offense. There are many other crimes that fall under theft, including Schemes to Defraud, Unlawful Receipt of Benefits, and Conspiracy.
